John C. Malone

John C. Malone was born in 1941 in Milford, Connecticut. Malone obtained a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Economics from Yale University in 1963. He also received a Master of Science in Industrial Management from Johns Hopkins in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Operations Research from Johns Hopkins in 1967.

Malone began his career in 1963 at Bell Telephone Laboratories/AT&T in economic planning and research and development. In 1968, he joined McKinsey & Company, becoming Group Vice president at General Instrument Company in 1970. He served as Director of the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) from 1974 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1993. During the 1977-1978 term, he was the NCTA’s Treasurer.

He is Chairman of the Board of Liberty Media Corporation, Liberty Broadband Corporation and Liberty Global plc. From 1996 to March 1999, when Tele-Communications, Inc. (TCI) merged with AT&T Corp., he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TCI. Previous to that, from 1973 to 1996, Malone served as President and Chief Executive Officer of TCI.

He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Qurate Retail, Inc. (formerly Liberty Interactive), Liberty Latin America Ltd. and Discovery, Inc. Additionally, Malone is a director emeritus of Charter Communications, Inc. and Chairman Emeritus of the Board for Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. He also owns 7% of the the entertainment company Lionsgate, whose subsidiaries include Starz Inc., Lionsgate Films, Summit Entertainment, and MGM+ (Formerly known as Epix).

With over 2.2 million acres, Malone is the largest individual landowner in the US, and owns 8% of The Atlanta braves. His real estate holdings including Humewood Castle and Castlmartin House and Estate in Ireland. A 2017 profile in Business Insider claimed he had a net worth of $9.22 billion.

Malone's political beliefs have been described as libertarian. He is on the board of directors for the Cato Institute. He donated $250,000 to Donald Trump during his successful presidential bid in 2016. However, he later expressed support for Michael Bloomberg during the 2020 United States presidential election, claiming that Donald Trump was too “chaotic”.
