Lois Kapila

Lois Kapila

Lois Kapila is the editor-in-chief, founder and owner (83%) of the Dublin Inquirer.

She was born in England to a British mother and Indian Father. After studying Russian languages and literature at Oxford, she moved to Kyrgyzstan to work with an English-language newspaper.

It was while in Kyrgyzstan that she met Sam Tranum, who was there teaching journalism. The pair moved to the US and got married before Kapila returned to the UK to complete a Masters degree in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics. A spell working in the public defender's office in New York was followed by two years in Calcutta working as a journalist on another English-language newspaper, The Statesman.

The move to Ireland with Tranum was partially motivated by visa rules relating to UK residency but what was expected to be a short-term stay became extended after the pair established The Dublin Inquirer in 2015.

She was shortlisted for Orwell Prize for Journalism and Prix Europa's European Journalist of the Year in 2019.

Her father, Mukesh Kapila, owns 6.29% of the Dublin Inquirer. Born in India, he is a medical doctor, author and emeritus professor for Global Health and Humanitarian Affairs at the University of Manchester.
