The Bonnier Family
The Bonnier family is a Swedish media dynasty. Founded in 1804 by Gerhard Bonnier in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Bonnier Group has grown into a multi-faceted media conglomerate with a diverse portfolio of businesses spanning publishing, broadcasting, digital media, online commerce, and film and TV production.
The origins of the Bonnier Group can be traced back to the establishment of the Albert Bonnier Publishing House in Sweden in 1837. Under the leadership of Albert Bonnier, the company flourished and expanded its reach in the Swedish literary world. The business was further developed by his sons Karl and Tor Bonnier, who expanded into new genres and formats, including magazines and periodicals. The 20th century saw the Bonnier Group's growth beyond publishing, with ventures into radio, television, and later digital media.
The Bonnier Groups output includes Dagens Nyheter, one of Sweden's most popular daily newspapers, as well as Veckans Affärer, a business magazine focusing on economics, finance and entrepreneurship, and Amelia, a popular fashion and lifestyle magazine. They also helped to establish and grow the TV4 Group, one of the largest commercial television networks in Sweden, before it was sold to Telia Company in 2019.
In 2023, the Bonnier Group purchased 17.8% of the shares of the Ireland’s Business Post Media Group, their first foray into English language media markets.
