Clem Ryan co-founded KFM in 2002 alongside radio executive Séan Ashmore and has served as the station's CEO since 2009. He is the largest shareholder in the station, holding 48% both directly and via County Kildare Broadcasting Limited.


Ryan is originally from County Clare. He grew up in Clarecastle and attended secondary school at Ennis CBS. Upon graduating from NUI Galway (now University of Galway), he briefly taught secondary school in Athy before entering the radio sector. He first served as a sports editor for Carlow-Kilkenny Radio (CKR) in Carlow in the early 1990s, following the Independent Radio and Television Commission’s issuing of private licences. Ryan became well known in sports broadcasting and won a GAA McNamee Award for his work in 1998. In 2000, he joined RTÉ as a sports reporter before co-founding KFM two years later. Ryan left RTÉ in 2009 to focus on his expanding commitments at KFM. In addition to his roles as CEO and major shareholder, he has also worked as a presenting on KFM, helming the flagship morning current affairs show “Kildare Show” before reducing his on-air presence. As of 2026, he still presents Ceol agus Caint, a weekly traditional and folk music programme.

  • Sean Ashmore
    Ryan's most significant business relationship. Ashmore co-founded KFM with Ryan in 2002 and is now co-largest shareholder through Heart Media Ltd's Fessenden Radio Investments Ltd subsidiary. The two jointly executed the 2019 buyout that consolidated their respective shareholdings. Through Heart Media, Ashmore and his business partner Ciara O'Connor hold a combined 48% of KFM (24% each), mirroring Ryan's own 48% stake. Ashmore and O'Connor also hold majority or significant shareholdings in East Coast FM (Wicklow) and Sunshine 106.8 (Dublin) through the same Heart Media chain, placing Ryan within a wider network of Irish independent local radio ownership.
  • Ciara O'Connor
    Ryan's co-shareholder at KFM through the Heart Media chain. O'Connor is co-beneficial owner of Heart Media Ltd alongside Seán Ashmore, holding 50% of the company. Through the Heart Media / Fessenden chain, she holds an ultimate 24% beneficial stake in KFM, alongside indirect interests in East Coast FM and Sunshine 106.8.
  • Anna May McHugh
    Ryan's board chair and minority co-shareholder, holding a 4% beneficial stake in KFM. Originally from Ballyadams, County Laois, McHugh has been Managing Director of the National Ploughing Association since 1973 and has presided over the National Ploughing Championships' growth into Europe's largest outdoor agricultural trade exhibition. She was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Laws by Trinity College Dublin in 2024 and the Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the French Government in 2015.
