Spin South West is a regional radio station based in Limerick. It was established by Denis O’Brien’s Communicorp in 2007 as a dedicated youth radio station and was sold to Bauer Media in 2021.
Spin South West emerged in response to a 2006 Broadcasting Commission of Ireland call for applications for a youth-targeted radio station for the south west region of Ireland. The original consortium was chaired by Liam O’Shea, then Managing Director of Clare FM but the largest shareholder (45%) was the Dublin Station Spin FM, owned by Denis O’Brien. The other original shareholders were Clare FM itself (15%), Setanta Radio Limited, a subsidiary of the then Irish sports television channel (10%), and four private investors including former Irish rugby international Keith Wood (10%). In its initial application for the licence Spin South West Limited committed to investing €3.8m into the station, envisaging the creation of 40 jobs and generating revenues of €2.1m by its third year of operation. The station was announced as the successful applicant in September 2006 and went on air the following July (2007).
Although frequently described as part of Denis O’Brien’s Communicorp group through the early 2010s, Communicorp’s stake remained at the 45% minority level until 2015 when first Setanta and then Clare FM (in 2018) sold their holdings to Communicorp bringing the latter’s total holding to 70% by the close of 2018.
When Bauer approached Communicorp in 2021 with a view to acquiring all of its Irish assets, the private shareholders who owned the remaining 30% of Spin South West Limited also agreed to sell on their holdings. Following the acquisition, the original Spin South West Limited was dissolved, with the station now operating under Bauer Media Audio Ireland LP (LP3374).
Bauer Media Audio Ireland LP is owned by the Hamburg, Germany-based Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG (Bauer Media Group), which is owned by the Bauer Family (Germany), with Yvonne Bauer as the largest shareholder (85%) and sisters Mirja, Saskia, and Nicola as secondary shareholders (5% each).
Bauer Media first entered the Irish radio market in 2021, when it purchased Communicorp’s Irish stations (then owned by businessman Denis O’Brien). Thus, in addition to Spin South West, Bauer Media Audio Ireland LP also operates former Communicorp stations, including Today FM, Newstalk, 98FM, and SPIN1038. Bauer has since added Cork's Red FM, iRadio and Beat 102-103 to its Irish portfolio. As of 2024, the Bauer Irish stations collectively reached 2.24 million weekly listeners, the largest cumulative listener base in the country.
Broadcasting to the Munster region on 102-103 and 94.7 MHz FM, Spin South West mainly targets a young provincial audience in the 15 to 34 age bracket with a schedule built around popular music. From its launch in 2007, it has actively mirrored the schedule of Communicorp’s Dublin station Spin 1038 and there is a degree of simulcasting across the stations. In 2012, the station’s news service was effectively transferred to its Dublin counterpart with a loss of three jobs at the Munster station. The two stations also share brand identity through shared jingles and corporate visuals. Indeed, until 2017, both stations shared a Chief Executive, Jamie Crawford and a single news editor.
